WHY AI CAN'T REPLACE THE HEART OF THERAPY

Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about how artificial intelligence is showing up in the world of mental health. From AI-generated journal prompts to chatbot-style support apps, we’re seeing technology offer tools that mimic aspects of therapy.

But as a licensed marriage and family therapist, I want to say something clearly and unapologetically:

AI cannot replace therapy.

More specifically, it cannot replace the therapeutic relationship—which is, arguably, the most powerful and healing element of the entire process.

Tools vs. Transformation

I understand the appeal of convenience and instant access. There’s real value in having mental health support tools at your fingertips: breathing exercises, cognitive prompts, even AI-generated reminders of positive habits. I’ve used some of these tools myself and occasionally recommend them to clients as supplements.

However, therapy isn’t a transaction. It’s a relationship. And relationships, especially ones rooted in healing, can’t be outsourced to machines.

The Power of Being Seen

When you step into a therapy space with me, you aren’t just showing up for advice or tips. You’re coming to be seen. Really seen. In all your complexity, your longing, your resilience, your heartbreak, your questions.

That moment when someone finally says something out loud that they’ve never shared before...That pause when tears come, and there’s no rush to fix or move on...That sacred unfolding of a life story, and the chance to name it, reframe it, and own it...

These are moments of connection. They are moments that change us—not because of what was said, but because of how we were met.

AI can mirror language. But it cannot mirror presence.

Therapy Is Not a Script

The work I do is deeply relational. I draw from approaches like Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Imago Therapy, and Solution-Focused work - all of which rely not just on knowledge, but on attunement. My clients know I’m listening not only to their words, but to the emotions under the surface, the tension in the room, the metaphors they use, the moments when silence speaks volumes.

This is intuitive work. It’s informed by experience, by timing, by wisdom, and by the felt sense of safety between two people. You can’t automate that.

What You Deserve

You deserve therapy that meets you with presence, curiosity, and respect. You deserve a relationship that honors your story, not just processes your symptoms. You deserve healing that is human.

So while I welcome the ways technology can support mental wellness, I’ll always believe that real therapy happens in the sacred space between two people. And that space is irreplaceable.
